Professor Dave Weiner and his wife Beth at his reception lunch displaying a photo of their boys, future USF students.

"David Weiner, CPA taught at USF for nearly 40 years as an accounting professor, and will retire officially at the end of this school year. Originally from New York, his education included (BA) Harper College, (MBA) Cornell University, and (Ph.D) University of Michigan. He was was revered by faculty and students alike and spent many years improving the accounting curricula and advising his students regarding internships and career choices. His former students who come back on campus always ask about him. If you look at the names that adorn faculty offices in Malloy I would guess that 75% of those benefactors profited early on from David's teaching, caring, and concern.

One student provided a quote that appeared in the Foghorn years ago that summed up David's contribution to the school of Business and the accounting program in terms of his rigorous teaching style, no nonsense assignments, and tough exams.

'David Weiner, accounting professor, School of Business will always be remembered for two things:

(1) good accounting students, and
(2) fewer accounting students'

David made scores of contacts in the professional community in the Bay Area and for a long while we had a pipeline for our students to the biggest and best accounting firms in the City. David still has countless friends from the profession who, because of David's prodding personality made huge contributions of time and capital to our school. Madonna Lounge in Malloy Hall bears the name of David's long-time friend Jon C. Madonna (retired as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of KPMG). David, now retired December 2010, lives in Redwood City, immersed in his long time passion of photography, with Beth his wife of 20 years and their two young sons, pictured here.

As a school we continue to be blessed in many ways from David's counseling, contacts, and community service over the years. He will truly be missed and never forgotten."

We asked a former Dave Weiner student to comment on Dave Scalise’s letter, and received this reply:

I think Dave Scalise covers it all.  I was a general business major when I took Professor Weiner's class and in part began my career in public accounting, with what was then Ernst & Ernst, because of him.  But then, because of Dave Scalise and his business law class, I knew when I went into public accounting that I would one day end up in law school.

Please pass on my heartfelt thanks and congratulations to Professor Weiner on his retirement.

Larry
