Professor Rob Briner accepted an invitation from our Professor Neil Walshe — formerly colleagues at The University of London — to conduct a residency at USF School of Business and Professional Studies to explore issues of evidence based management, an academic discipline which is receiving increased interest in business school education internationally. We asked Professor Walshe to provide us with some background on his collaborations with Professor Briner, and the significance of this work for business students. His answers follow:
"During my time at the University of London," Professor Walshe writes, "I worked closely with Professor Briner on examining the role of courage and cowardice in the workplace. Our work focused on how courageous behaviour affects those individuals who display it as part of their workrole.
One project that Professor Briner and I will be looking at in the coming months is the relationship between fear and courage among ordnance disposal operatives in an attempt to better understand if, and how, emotion affects the propensity to behave courageously.
More recently, Professor Briner has been a central figure in the movement promoting evidence based management in both academic research and practitioner activity. The role of evidence based management is incredibly important to how business schools will teach the next generation of students. It has an especially important role in bridging the academic/practitioner divide for which the management discipline is so often criticized for perpetuating. Understating how to construct, assess, and in turn, use evidence in our teaching and research can only strengthen the rigor of our discipline and subsequently, the quality of students which we produce."
Professor Briner will be presenting his work on evidence based management in Malloy Hall - Room 230, this coming Tuesday the 8th of February from 11:45am – 12:45pm. All faculty, staff, and students are welcome to attend.
