Professor Tony Ribera, Ph.D, Director of The USF Law
Enforcement Program (and a former Chief of Police in San Francisco) hosted the
annual USF International Institute of Criminal Justice Leadership Symposium in
a two day gathering —March 15 and 16 —of more than 170 police chiefs, and law
enforcement leaders from across California, and from as far away as Washington,
DC.
This year’s theme: “MORALE: A RESPONSIBILITY OF LEADERSHIP,
featured a keynote speech from Chief George Gascon of The San Francisco Police
Department. Chief Gascon also conducted
a Chief’s Roundtable to close the symposium. Other speakers and panelists included: Chief Bernard Melekian, Director of
the Federal Office of Community Oriented Policing Services; Paul Cappitelli,
Executive Director of California Peace Officers' Standards and Training;
Professor Yumi Wilson, San Francisco State University; and Assistant Chief Boyd
Long, of the San Diego Police Department. A industry trade show was also part of the event.
“This year’s symposium continued our tradition of providing
concentrated, informative and inspiring information for law enforcement
professionals, in a setting that encourages cooperation and professional
fraternity, “ said Chief Ribera. “Honestly, I don’t think there’s another institution like USF and our
Law Enforcement Program that could generate so much turnout, and so much generous participation from top
professionals in the field. I’m real
proud of what we’ve accomplished, and very pleased with what this means for our
students.”
