Who are you? Where are you headed? How is USF School of Business and Professional Studies helping you to get where you want to be? These are typical academic questions that we’ve heard a million times. The answers used to languish on essays. Not any more.
Today, students who want to introduce themselves to employers — and to their own personal networks — need to do a lot better than that: they need to do video resumés, and they have to publish them on the internet, market them, and turn the whole process into viable business practices.
Professor Ryan Wright’s class, BUS 370: Internet Business Applications is dedicated to this process. And as cool as their new video resumés are — and they are great — the resumés only demonstrate a small portion of what the students are doing.
We asked Professor Wright to give us a little background on this class, and its objectives:
What exactly is this class?Internet Business Applications is a course which enables students to create, maintain and market Internet-based services, social media and web platforms. Some of the activities in the class include: 1) creation and marketing of YouTube Viral Videos, 2) creation and marketing of a web-based business and 3) provide online advertising expertise to NGOs and SF’s small business committee through the Google Online Marketing Challenge.
What is the exact assignment that produced these video resumés?This assignment is the first part of an Internet video sequence where students are asked to develop a video, market the video and utilize analytic software to see who has visited their video. In this part they were asked three basic questions: 1) who are they, 2) where they see themselves in 5 years and 3) how has SF and USF prepared them for their career goals.
What else should we mention?Creation of the content is only the beginning in this class. Understanding how to measure user interaction, provide online marketing and use business processes is the full scope of the class.
