We are proud to announce that Kathy's Chinese California Cuisine and Kel-Toy, Inc. are the recipients of our 2013 Gellert Family Business Award. The annual award recognizes extraordinary business achievement and community service, and is made possible by a generous gift from The Carl Gellert and Celia Berta Gellert Foundation. Kathy's Chinese California Cuisine and Kel-Toy, Inc. were honored during a formal awards ceremony on Wednesday, May 22.
"Kathy's Chinese California Cuisine and Kel-Toy, Inc. are deserving recipients of this award," said School of Management Dean Michael J. Webber. "While in vastly different areas of business, both organizations began with the focus on serving a need in their communities. We are honoring Kathy's for its continuous support of youth sports, and for offering diners more healthful options in Chinese cuisine. Kel-Toy, Inc. is being recognized for its long history of working with San Francisco schools and supporting the Asian American Foundation to enhance the lives of Asian Americans here in San Francisco."
"We are delighted to shine a spotlight on these Gellert Family Business Awardees of 2013," said Assistant Professor Monika Hudson, director of the Gellert Family Business Resource Center. "With this unique award, we acknowledge successful family businesses, while also providing professional and academic resources to support their continued efforts to thrive in San Francisco."
The Gellert Family Business Resource Center at USF takes a three-pronged approach to serving its community, by recognizing excellence, keeping family businesses informed, and developing family business leadership. The goal of the University of San Francisco's Gellert Family Business Resource Center is to provide family-owned businesses with access to networking, create an open exchange of strategic and practical family business information, and advance the field of family business research, education, and scholarship. On an annual basis, the Center recognizes existing Bay Area family-owned businesses that exemplify the acumen, tenacity, and community spirit typical of the industry.
Since opening its doors in 1992, Kathy's Chinese California Cuisine has revolutionized traditional Chinese dishes by providing healthy options for customers. Each dish is prepared using no fat, skin, bones or preservatives and is cooked with only canola oil. This way Kathy's puts its own unique spin on traditional Chinese cuisine, resulting in food that has only a fraction of the calories of traditional Chinese dishes. In addition being a neighborhood favorite, Kathy's has been a strong proponent of youth sports, advocating for healthy activities for young people.
Kel-Toy, Inc. has established itself as San Francisco's one-stop shopping resource for gift, floral, craft, packaging, and wedding-favor wholesale market needs since 1981. Beyond providing customers with items such as ribbons, candles, plush toys, fabric displays, plastic boxes, and table runners, Kel-Toy, Inc. is a model of corporate social responsibility with a long history of working with San Francisco schools to assist in underwriting a portion of their operating costs, as well as supporting the Asian American Foundation to enhance the lives of others throughout the city.
The Carl Gellert and Celia Berta Gellert Foundation's policy is to promote educational, charitable, scientific, literary, or religious programs in the nine counties of the greater San Francisco Bay Area. The Gellert Foundation is the primary contributor to the Gellert Family Business Resource Center.More information on the Gellert Family Business Resource Center>>
