“Two Standard Deviations From The Mean”: Huh? Professor Offers Statistical Reasoning Skills In New Course

11-02-2010
Joel Oberstone

Spaces are now available for the Spring, 2011 new course: BA 334, Essentials of Business Statistics, offered by Professor Joel Oberstone. Based on the principles and practice of statistical reasoning, the new course addresses what WIRED Magazine recently called “the #1 missing skill of graduating business students.”

Professor Oberstone writes: “There is no number-grinding or in-class exams: it consists primarily of individual and team projects to build your skills and uses spreadsheet data analysis software in lieu of number grinding. In other words, BA 334 is taught in the same manner as you will be expected to use statistical skills in a professional setting.

For a great intro to the course, and to the real-world use of these skills check out Professor Oberstone’s flyer and his short article.

Professor Oberstone is a regular columnist for Wall St. Journal, Europe, writing pieces that employ statistical reasoning to consider key questions in big-time sports, a practice that is now known as “sports analytics.” He focuses on the top European football (“soccer”) leagues. He is also Vice-Chair for Programs, INFORMS SpORts Cluster.
