San Francisco resident Craig Newmark — whose small Internet
Bulletin Board was originally designed to serve the Bay Area community, and then
evolved into an internationally recognized public forum — was honored by the
University of San Francisco School of Business and Professional Studies with an
honorary Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa .
Mr. Newmark’s creation, Craigslist, was conceived with an
optimistic faith in civility and democracy. As a social entrepreneur, Mr. Newmark has been
committed to sustaining Craigslist as a community for all, based on a free
exchange of ideas and a process that is self-policing and self-correcting.
Now one of the top ten online companies in the world as
measured by page views, Craigslist receives more than 10 billion page views per
month from more than 35 million viewers in 550 cities and 55 countries. It has a triple-digit annual growth
rate.
In addition to his on-going financial success, Mr. Newmark
also supports many nonprofit and philanthropic organizations . He donates much of his time to helping
Bay Area non-profits bring technology to the grassroots level. He also created Craigslist Foundation,
a nonprofit organization, which he calls a catalyst for the social sector.
USF BPS is proud to honor Craig Newmark for his success at
directing technology to promote “a common good that transcends the interests of
particular individuals or groups”(USF Vision, Mission and Values Statement).
