Exhibition Calendar
A public art crossroads in the University of San Francisco’s main library, the Mary and Carter Thacher Gallery at USF is a forum where creativity, scholarship, and community converge. Each year the Thacher Gallery presents six exhibitions that probe community and aesthetic issues, multicultural and interfaith dialogue, and the urban Jesuit university’s commitment to social justice.

Power Up: Serigraphs by Corita Kent
Corita Kent gained international fame for her vibrant serigraphs during the 1960s and 1970s. A Sister of the Immaculate Heart of Mary until 1968, Kent’s art reflects her spirituality, her commitment to social justice, her hope for peace and her delight in “the world that takes place all around us.” Using exuberant splashes of color and political texts, the serigraphs exhibited here represent works done throughout her careers in Los Angeles and Boston.
Gallery presentation: Thursday, March 6, 3-4 p.m.
Speakers will include Sasha Carrera, Education Coordinator for the Corita Art Center, and Amy Franceschini and Stuart McKee, Graphic Design Faculty Members.

Ann Weber – Sculptures
Using strips of flattened cardboard, staples and shellac, Ann Weber creates voluptuous
geometric sculptures. Based primarily on the circle and cylinder, her sculptures are often
comprised of interlocking pairs, suggesting intimacy and "symbols of life, male and female,
and the origin of all forms in nature." Pushing her materials to their limits, the final forms
have the warm sheen of polished bronze and the weighty presence of prehistoric menhirs.
This exhibition is being held in conjunction with the opening of "Spirit and Matter," the
premier exhibition of USF’s new Sculpture Terrace on the roof of Kalmanowitz Hall.

The Celluloid Bible – Marketing Films Inspired by Scripture
Bringing together vintage movie posters from around the world along with a selection of
ancillary promotional and commemorative materials, The Celluloid Bible examines how
the Bible has been visualized on film. These posters, dated from 1898 to the present,
promote films inspired by the Bible and biblical era, including domestic and international
productions, the classic and obscure, grandiose and camp.

As the Stars Go By – Textiles by Anna Von Mertens
The textiles in As the Stars Go By depict the precise star rotation patterns above violent
moments in American history. The pieces, with the proportions of a movie screen to
emphasize each specific point of view, memorialize these historical events while
simultaneously documenting a natural cycle oblivious to the violence below. Events
depicted include September 11th; the one-day Battle of Antietam during the Civil War; and
the first sighting of land by Christopher Columbus off the coast of the Bahamas.
March 2—April 19, 2009
Make Believe – Video Works by Desiree Holman
As an interdisciplinary visual artist, Desiree Holman makes figurative props—costumes and
masks—to be worn by herself and actors in role-playing games and portrayals of familiar
settings such as talk therapy sessions and family sitcoms. These scenarios often play out
the characters' domestic desires, revealing more often than not the delusions of family
life.
