Ricci Institute Library
The Ricci Institute for Chinese-Western Cultural History maintains the combined collections of the Biblioteca Sinensis Societatis lesu, the Fr. Francis Rouleau Archives, and the Ricci Institute Library. Together they comprise more than 80,000 volumes in Chinese and Western languages on the history, philosophy, religion, science, and literature of the Ming and Qing Dynasties, with concentration on the Jesuit era, mission history, and Chinese Christianity.
The above resources include editions of the Chinese classics; rare European books and manuscripts on the Chinese Rites Controversy; an extensive microfilm collection of documents from the Archivum Romanum Societatis lesu, the Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana, and other archives; a collection of traditional Chinese paintings, rubbings, maps, photographs and other artifacts; and a group of Chinese Christian paintings from the 1930's and 1940's.
A portion of the Ricci Institute Library's holdings appears in Ignacio, with the location indicated as "Chinese Library."
The library's collections are non-circulating, and are available by appointment only. See contact information below.
