The Norman H. Strouse Collection of Thomas Bird Mosher
The books on display have been selected from a comprehensive collection of books published by Thomas Bird Mosher that were given to the Gleeson Library Donohue Rare Book Room by the distinguished book collector and former Gleeson Library Associate, Norman Strouse. This year marks the 30th anniversary in which the honor of the Sir Thomas More award was established by Fr. William J. Monihan and was bestowed upon its first recipient, Norman Strouse. The Sir Thomas More Medal recognizes and celebrates the ideal of "private collecting, a public benefit." Norman Strouse's life-long commitment to sharing his interest, enthusiasm, and knowledge of books embodies the spirit of the Medal. Not one to see the world of books as the domain of the bibliophile exclusively, from early on he sought to make available his collections to others. Today, countless researchers have benefited from his generosity. In addition to the books given to the Gleeson Library, Norman Strouse also provided major collections to The Bancroft Library and Special Collections at the University of California, Santa Cruz.
The Gleeson Library's Donohue Rare Book Room collection of books published by Thomas Bird Mosher is one of the largest in the United States. The Library's holdings include over four hundred titles and variant editions as well as a significant collection of unpublished letters and manuscripts reflecting the personal and professional activities of Thomas Bird Mosher and his endeavor. The collection was recently made use of for the new Mosher bibliography by Philip R. Bishop, Thomas Bird Mosher: Pirate Prince of Publishers (Oak Knoll and The British Library, 1998).
The Mosher books are fully cataloged on Ignacio, the Library's online catalog. Students and Gleeson Library patrons are encouraged to make use of this collection.
