Online Directories and Guides

These easy to navigate guides provide a wealth of carefully selected, authoritative health and medical information for consumers and professionals.

  • healthfinder®
    A guide to consumer health information on prevention & wellness, diseases, and alternative medicine. You can also search for information about health care providers, hospitals and nursing homes in a geographic area. Find topics alphabetically or by category: for men or women, by age from kids to seniors, by race and ethnicity, and for parents, caregivers, health professionals, and others.
  • Medline Plus
    Up-to-date information from the National Library of Medicine, the world's largest medical library. Search for news, drug information, medical encyclopedia articles, clinical trials, lists of hospitals and physicians, health information in Spanish and other languages, and other resources including the MEDLINE database of medical journal articles as well as health information from local health libraries and national and international organizations.
  • National Women's Health Information Center
    Website and toll-free call center created to provide free, reliable health information. The website includes current news and sections on special topics such as body image, quitting smoking, disabilities and pregnancy, with pages in English, Spanish, and Chinese. Specialists speaking English and Spanish staff the Call Center information, referral, and breastfeeding helpline at 1-800-994-WOMAN (1-800-994-9662).

Federal government sites provide in-depth information on health-related topics.

  • Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
    Find information on diseases, vaccines and immunizations, injury and violence prevention. Also links to full-text articles in online journals Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report and Emerging Infectious Diseases.
  • Food and Drug Admnistration (FDA)
    Search here for information on food safety and food-borne diseases as well as safety of cosmetics, medicines, medical devices, and radiation-emitting products.
  • National Institutes of Health (NIH)
    The NIH, with 27 separate institutes and centers, supports research projects on diseases such as cancer, Alzheimer's, diabetes, arthritis, and AIDS.
  • Organ Donation
    Site created by the Department of Health and Human Services for information about organ donation and transplantation issues.

Periodicals

Here is a sample of government documents shelved in Gleeson Library's Periodicals Department that provide authoritative health information for professionals, educators and consumers. These materials can be checked out at the Periodicals Desk.

  • American Rehabilitation U.S. Dept. of Education, Rehabilitation Services Administration. Best practices, philosophy, and resources for rehabilitation programs and transition services.
  • Environmental Health Perspectives: EHP Journal of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. Also available online. Peer-reviewed journal dedicated to the environment’s effect on human health. Monthly sections devoted to children’s health and environmental medicine.
  • FDA Consumer The magazine of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Also available online. Latest findings on diet, nutrition and new medicines.
  • Public Health Reports U.S. Public Health Service in collaboration with Association of Schools of Public Health. Peer-reviewed journal on wide variety of public health topics. 

Federal Agency Reports and Documents

Print materials shelved in the Government Documents Room include reports, statistics, and handbooks on physical and mental health from government agencies and commissions.
