Disposition of Mixed Edition Titles in Stacks/Storage

In the last few years, legal publishers have begun introducing new editions to multi-volume sets on a volume by volume basis rather than re-issuing all volumes at once. This tendency creates a situation where two different editions of a given title can co-exist in the Stacks at the same time, and cause us to inadvertently recycle volumes of the older edition. Generally, the older edition is moved to Storage when all volumes associated with the new edition have arrived.

A new edition of the title "Couch on Insurance" serves as a fitting example. The new edition was discovered only after receiving approximately 2 - 5 volumes with instructions to replace the older volumes. We prefer that both editions stay on the shelves, together in the Stacks, until the new edition is completed.

When it is clear - from the treatment of previous editions - that such a title is to be kept in Storage rather than recycled, we follow the usual procedures (i.e., by cataloging the new edition for the Stack(s), and leaving the older edition in the Stacks until the new edition is completed). At that time, Cataloging will close the new edition, change the location of the older edition to Storage, and put it through processing as usual.

If it is unknown whether or not the new edition has been completed, it will be up to the "shelver" of the volumes to initiate a title maintenance form requesting that the new edition be closed and the older edition be moved to Storage.
