Library Policies in Various Areas

Government Depository Items:

Summary of joint cataloging meeting of 8/26/99 with Glesson Library:

1.  Law library staff will code government depository items upon cataloging with a "g" in the b3 field in Innopac.

2.  If a bib record covers more than 1 item, the depository item(s) will have a note in the item record as well.

3.  If Law library receive a depository item, which is an exact duplicate of a non-depository item, and staff decides to keep only one, the depository item (which should be stamped at Glesson with the Document Collection date stamp) will be the one, which is kept.

4.  Andi, at Glesson Library will code the bib records of all the law library/depository items, which Debbie Benrubi currently records on cards.

5.  Glesson will continue to code depository items with a "d" in the 12 field in Innopac.

6.  Glesson does not or will not leave out a link to an abstract. Glesson currently uses the following messages in subfield z:

"Access Internet version" for all 856 fields, or

"Access Internet version (Adobe Acrobat PDF file)" where appropriate, or

"Access Internet version (abstract)" or

"Access Internet version (table of contents)" or

"Access Internet version (updated version)."

7.  Glesson is following GPO standards by putting a URL in a 530 note field if a PURL is available; the PURL goes in the 856 field. If there is PURL and the URL is very long, we have been omitting the URL altogether.

8.  Glesson will also follow the law library's lead on connecting to a page form which Adobe Acrobat can be downloaded rather than the PDF file itself if that is available.

MARC Bibliographic Format (Including Format Integration):

Any record created or updated on RLIN must reflect the current USMARC Bibliographic Format as described in: USMARC Format for Bibliographic Data: including guidelines for content designation / prepared by Network Development and MARC Standards Office, and interpreted by the Library of Congress Cataloging and Support Office (CPSO).

In addition, for serials, any record created or updated on RLIN must also reflect the current USMARC Bibliographic Format as interpreted by CONSER in the CONSER Editing Guide and the CONSER Cataloging Manual.

Records updated only on Innopac do not need to be retagged to conform to current USMARC standards.

Classification of Bibliographies:

The library will classify bibliographies according to topic, rather than form, to facilitate patrons browsing the shelves by topic. That is, the library will follow the policies of the Library of Congress for assigning alternate topical numbers as outlined in the Subject Cataloging Manual: Classification, "Alternate Class Numbers: Bibliography, F150."

Location of Human Rights Watch Materials with Tape on their Spines:

All Human Rights Watch materials with tape on the spine (perfect bound, almost) will have an RBR location, based on format (i.e., they're too flimsy to be in regular stacks).

Classification of Hearings and Reports of Legislative Committees of the State of California:

The library will follow the policies of the Library of Congress, as outlined in the Subject Cataloging Manual: Classification, "Legislative Hearings and Reports, F618" with the following exception in regards to hearings and reports of legislative committees of the State of California.

These hearings and reports will not be classified in topical numbers (e.g., in B-Z), but will be classified in the appropriate form number in KFC by committee, regardless of whether or not they have been issued to accompany a specific bill.

This provision does not apply to hearings and reports of legislative committees of other states; this policy is designed to keep California legislative materials together in the California Stack. Since other state materials are dispersed throughout the collection, it is not necessary to keep them clustered by form in KFA-KFW.

Classification of Law Periodicals:

In a case where a journal could be equally well classed under topic or as a law periodical/law review (K1-36), the library will class the journal as a law periodical. This will allow the unbound issues of the journal to be shelved in the Reserve Book Room, and will assist patrons who look for legal periodicals alphabetically in K1-36.

Audiocassettes:

Include the following in the ANT field of the RLIN HOLdings screen for all audiocassettes:

ANT \Shelved in Law Reserve near video collection.\
