If a record is being passed from RLIN to the OPAC with a URL in the 856 field,
we will be double-checking the links as they come in. If the URL connects to
a display for an abstract and the record is for hard copy format then delete
856 field for that link. However, if the record is for an online version or
edition of the monograph, serial, etc... then we shall be keeping the link to
the abstract only. The abstract contains information above and beyond the bib
record we are passing.
What if we come across a link that is broken and it was once connecting us
to a page on a site that is no longer availble? If the URL is from a record
that refers to an online version, then delete the 856 field in the bib record.
If the URL is from a record that refers to an online version, then suppress
the recod and route a copy to collection development librarian for the further
decisions.
When tagging a URL in the 856 field make sure that it connects to a page where
you can download the version from, rather connecting to the version itself which
might require it be viewed in Adobe Acrobat, or some other program.
When a URL from a record connects to a new amended version of the edition,
and we have a hard copy of the older/previous edition, but not the new one,
we are still updating the link so that it will connect to the new revised or
amended version. This only if the older edition is no longer posted online.
