Barcoding of Free Standing Volumes

The tentative procedures for barcoding free standing volumes are as follows.

BARCODE:

  • All free standing supplements that are titled such even if they are issued more than once a year
  • Free standing volumes that are issued annually including those which would otherwise be considered pocket parts

NOT BARCODED:

  • Advance Sheets
  • Pocket parts even if they are issued annually
  • Other mixed format releases such as looseleaf pages, softbound volumes, etc. if issued more than once per year

DECISIONS ABOUT WHEN TO BARCODE FREE STANDING VOLUMES ARE BASED ON:

  • A need for security for a given piece, i.e., a volume is an integral part of a small set that has been issued in lieu of a new edition and would circulate (or be taken by faculty) as a set.
  • The cost of the free standing volume, i.e., it is expensive.
  • The format of the volume lending itself to being barcoded, i.e., soft or hard bound.

Ellen and Remy are making the decisions about when to barcode free standing volumes.
