Tips for Using Ignacio
Research Basics #7 - Dorraine Zief Law Library Handout
Here are some
tips for getting the most out of Ignacio,
which tells you what books, journals, or other materials are owned or subscribed
to by the libraries at USF. For more advice or assistance, speak to a reference
librarian or call 415-422-6773.
-
Connect to
Ignacio at http://ignacio.usfca.edu/
-
The main
menu on Ignacio's initial screen displays all your search choices: keyword;
subject; author; title; combined author-title; call number; and government
documents number.
-
Use keyword
searching…
…to find books or journals whenever you aren't completely sure of
the title.
…as one way to find books or journals on the topic you are researching.
-
The asterisk
("*") is Ignacio's "wild card" character. Use
it in keyword searches to find variant forms of a word. Thus, "corporat*"
will retrieve "corporate," "corporation," "corporations,"
and so forth.
-
If your search
retrieves more than one item, you will see a list of results. Click on the
title of any item that interests you to see more details about that item.
(These details include the subject(s) covered, the call number (as a link
for browsing), the location, the author(s), information about recent updates,
and whether or not the item is checked out.)
-
Pay particular
attention to the location phrases that accompany call numbers. If the phrase
doesn't begin with "LAW," the item is not in the law library!
(See Finding Materials at the Zief Law Library
for more information.)
-
If you find
one book that seems useful, click on its "subject" links or on
the call number link to find other, similar books.
-
If a search
retrieves an unmanageable number of records, select "Modify Search"
or "Limit this Search" to limit your results. You can modify or
limit in many ways: by words in author, title, or subject; by date; by publisher;
by location in the law library or Gleeson library; or by type of material.
-
To return
to the main menu on Ignacio's initial screen, use the "Start Over"
button.
-
If you're
looking for journal articles, don't use Ignacio! Instead, use one
of the tools listed in the Zief Library web page
Finding Articles About Law.

information about Ignacio, download the Zief Library's 14-page guide,
Introducing Ignacio. (You will need Adobe's free
Adobe Reader to view and print this guide, which is a PDF document.)
