Borrowing and Renewing Library Materials
Every USF student, faculty member, and staffperson with a current ID card may
borrow materials from the Law Library. Your USF ID card is your library card,
and you must present it at the Circulation Desk in order to borrow materials.
Law library circulation is automated, and the bar code on your ID encodes information
essential to the check-out process. Patrons with new USF IDs need to have these
IDs "activated" at the Circulation Desk before they may borrow materials.
Because the law library is a research library, some of the collection may be
used only in the library. However, some materials do circulate. Ask at the Circulation
Desk if you have a question about what you may borrow or the loan period for
particular materials.
Non-faculty borrowers may check out most circulating items for up to thirty
days. (Shorter periods sometimes apply.) You may renew material if another patron
has not requested it. You may not renew overdue items until you pay any accrued
charges.
Overdue charges are 50 cents per day per item. Charges for recalled items are
$1 per day per item after 10 days. Charges for overdue reserve materials are
50 cents per hour per item. Replacement costs for lost or damaged items are
the cost to replace the item, plus a per-item processing charge of $35 for in-print
items, or $50 for out-of-print items. Students who fail to return materials
or to pay charges may have library privileges (such as checkout & renewal)
blocked and holds may be placed on their Bursar & Registrar accounts.
The following types of materials do not circulate: reporters,
statutes and codes; administrative regulations; periodicals and law reviews;
multi-volume sets; reserve books; reference books; form books; encyclopedias;
looseleaf services; microforms; computer disks; any other items labeled "library
use only," or having the status "lib. use only" in the online catalog.
The Reserve Book Room (RBR), located behind the Circulation Desk, contains
materials that are for library use only. USF patrons may use these materials
if they present a USF ID card, a valid law student ID from an ABA-accredited
law school, or a California bar card. You can determine if a book that you need
is located in the Reserve Book Room by reviewing the online catalog record for
your book. If the location field states that the material is located in "LAW-RESERVE,"
you will need to ask for the item at the Circulation Desk.
The library has installed a book security system in order to ensure that
materials are processed properly before they leave the library. The library
reserves the right to inspect handbags, backpacks, briefcases and all other
carry-in items.
Renew Books Online
Patrons may renew law library materials online by accessing their online patron
record.
Interlibrary Loan Services
If you are a USF Law faculty member, student, or staff member and need a book
that the library does not have, we will try to borrow it from another library
through interlibrary loan.
The law library can also request copies of articles not available at USF from
other libraries or from commercial document delivery companies. If the law library
is not able to obtain a document for you directly, we will try to refer you
to a commercial service that can.
Interlibrary loan service is available to all USF law faculty, law students,
and law staff. These members of the USF law school community may request an
interlibrary loan by filling
out this form, calling 415-422-5120, or by visiting the reference desk at
the USF law library.
The Gleeson Library Interlibrary Loan Department (415-422-5585)
offers interlibrary loan service to other members of the USF community. Special
regional campus document delivery services (1-800-441-4355) are
available to students at USF's Sacramento, San Ramon, North Bay and South Bay
regional campuses.
If you are not affiliated with USF and you need photocopies from legal
publications, consider contacting one of the following fee-based document
delivery services:
For more information, see our Interlibrary
Loan Policies.
Course Reserves
Faculty members may place materials on reserve for students enrolled in their
courses by completing this request form and
sending it to Troy Cook at Zief Law Library's Circulation Desk. Course reserve
materials are located behind the Circulation Desk. Some materials are on permanent
reserve, while others are placed on reserve on a semester-by-semester basis.
Materials on course reserve include past and current exams, books, audiovisual
items, and personal copies of books and other materials from faculty members.
Conference Rooms and Special Rooms
Zief Library has seven rooms for USF law student group study. All are equipped
with VCRs, DVD players, and monitors. Groups (two or more students) may sign
up to use a room for a maximum of two hours per day per group. The sign-up book
is at the Circulation Desk. Unclaimed rooms will be held for up to 15 minutes
after the beginning of the group's scheduled time. Because tables and carrels
are for the use of all patrons, they may not be reserved. After 15 minutes,
the library may allow another group to use that room. For more information,
see our policy on group study rooms.
Printing in the Library
Dons Print is a "pay-as-you-go" printing system for USF campus computer labs
and libraries. A fee of three cents per page is charged to recover printing
costs. All campus computer lab and library laser printers will accept Dons Dollars,
loaded on your USF ID Card. For help with Dons Dollars or One Card (your USF
ID card), contact the One Card Office at 422-7663.
There are network printers in the copier room next to the Computer Training
& Research Center (CTRC) on Zief's main floor.
If you have any further questions about Dons Print, please consult with law
school IT staff in Zief's computer center (Room 105) or email law school IT
staff at: lawhelp at usfca.edu
Photocopying in the Library
The Zief library has five photocopy machines: two in the first-floor copier/printer
room, two in the second-floor copier/printer room, and one on the library's
lower floor. Machines located in each copier/printer room allow patrons to add
value to their One Card or copy cards.
All copy machines accept certain bills, and all allow use of your USF ID as
a copy card. Patrons without USF ID cards may get copy cards at the One Card
Office.
If you have problems with a copier or value-add machine, please notify the
library's Circulation Desk. The library staff can add paper to copiers, and
if there is a more serious problem, our staff will notify the appropriate repair
personnel.
