Current Index to Legal Periodicals on Westlaw

Contents

This is an overview of using the Current Index to Legal Periodicals (CILP) on Westlaw, including how to set up a WestClip search to have your searches automatically run in the future. To learn about features not discussed here, and for help and advice specific to your research, contact one of the reference librarians or call the reference desk at (415) 422-6773.

Coverage and Content

The Current Index to Legal Periodicals (CILP) is a weekly topical list of recently-published law review articles. It notifies researchers about newly articles, often before they appear in "full-text" law review databases on Lexis and Westlaw or in other law review search tools such as Index to Legal Periodicals or Legal Resource Index⁄LegalTrac.

The Zief Law Library has CILP issues for the past 12 months shelved at call number K 33 .C85 Law Reference. Westlaw has only the most recent 8 issues of CILP in the Current Index to Legal Periodicals (CILP) database.

Setting Up a WestClip Search

WestClip lets you run searches automatically on a regular basis and get notified when there are new results. This can be very useful if you are trying to stay abreast of scholarship in a particular area. Also, if you are writing a law review article, this is one way to monitor new articles to make sure your topic isn't preempted.

To create a WestClip search, follow these steps:

After you have run a "Terms and Connectors" search, select the "Add Search to WestClip" link at the top of the results list in the "Full Screen List" view. (If you are in the split-screen view, select the "Result Options" menu⁄link, then select "Add search to WestClip." The "Result Options" menu⁄link appears near the top of the "Result List" tab in the split-screen full-text display.)

At the next screen ("WestClip Create Entry"):

  1. Name the WestClip Search.

  2. Click the "Edit" button to the right of the heading "Delivery Settings." From the "Edit Delivery Settings" screen:

    1. Select "Weekly" from the "Frequency" drop-down menu.
    2. Select "E-mail" from the "Destination" drop-down menu, then click the "Properties" button. In the Properties page, enter your email address, then click the " Save" button.
    3. Select "Notification Only" from the "Result Format" drop-down menu.
    4. Select an appropriate "End by" date for your search.
    5. Make sure that the "Inform me of no results" box is not checked (unless you want to receive an e-mail message every time Westlaw runs the search and retrieves no results).
    6. Click the "Save" button for this "Delivery Settings" screen.

  3. Click the "Save" button at the bottom of the next "WestClip Create Entry" screen.

To view, edit, or delete any existing WestClip searches, select the "Alert Center" link near the top right-hand corner of the Westlaw screen, then select the "WestClip Directory" link in the WestClip category of the Alert Center directory.
