Scholarships

Merit Scholarships

The School of Law awards merit scholarships to selected students entering their first year of study, based on their pre-law school academic achievement and demonstrated potential for success in legal studies. All applicants are considered for merit scholarships, which may be granted after a review of the materials submitted in support of the application for admission. No additional financial aid or other forms are required. Successful applicants are notified of any scholarship award with their offer of admission.

Women Lawyers Committee Scholarship for Transitional Students

The Women Lawyers Committee awards a scholarship to an entering transitional student who has been out of school for a continuous five year period prior to seeking admission to USF law school. Information about the scholarship and how to apply will be sent to entering students when it is available.

A number of organizations not affiliated with the University provide scholarships to selected students depending on varying affiliations and other criteria. Law School Scholarship Program

Arthur Zief, Jr. Scholarship

The Arthur Zief, Jr. Scholarship is open to applicants who will have completed one year of study at USF School of Law and can demonstrate financial need. Preference is given to students with strong participation in extra-curricular activities, who are not receiving other significant USF aid.  Fifty-four students are awarded a non-renewable scholarship of $7,500 and one student receives a wild-card award of $1,500. 2008-09 Application Period for Zief Scholarships extends from April 18 until 4:00 P.M. on May 22, 2008. Saber Es Poder Scholarship

The Saber Es Poder Scholarship (Knowledge is Power) was established by Rev. Luis Quihuis, SJ in 1995 to provide scholarships for Latinos at USF towards the completion of their education at the University. College scholarships are awarded to qualified students with moderate to profound hearing loss to continue their education at undergraduate and graduate levels.  Students must demonstrate a serious commitment to academic and career excellence.  The scholarship is not renewable. It can be awarded twice, but applicants must reapply.

Harry A. Blackmun Scholarship

The Harry A. Blackmun Scholarship was established in honor of Honorable Harry A. Blackmun, Associate Justice Supreme Court of the United States, as a perpetual testament to his contribution to American jurisprudence, to his compassion and generosity of spirit, and to the inspiration he has provided by example and personal encouragement. The recipient will be chosen based on several factors including academic achievement, financial need, and potential for making a contribution to society and the legal profession. Applicants must be seniors or graduates applying to law school. In addition, preference will be given to applicants with a significant tie to the Justice's home state of Minnesota.

The Giles Sutherland Rich Memorial Scholarship

An award in the memory of Giles S. Rich, Circuit Judge, United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, will be given by the Federal Circuit Bar Association to a law student showing financial need, and having demonstrated academic promise, either in undergraduate studies or in law school. Selection for the award will be based on a written submission of no more than one page setting out the applicant's financial need, any interests in particular areas of the law, and any qualifications for the award considered relevant by the applicant.

The Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans

The purpose of The Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans is to provide opportunities for continuing generations of able and accomplished new Americans to achieve leadership in their chosen fields. The Program is established in recognition of the contributions new Americans have made to American life and in gratitude for the opportunities the United States has afforded the donors and their family. Applicants must be a new American; must have a bachelor's degree; and must be older than 30 years of age as of November 1st, 2004.

Samuel Lemberg Scholarship Loan Fund, Inc.

Loan funds are designed to help Jewish men and women who have difficulty pursuing higher education. Students must be pursuing a degree at an accredited institution.  Selections are based on academic ability, financial need, family problems, physical and mental disability, and potential for leadership in the Jewish community. Mexican-American, Hispanic and Latino Students

College Scholarship Program

Scholarships are available on a competitive basis for graduate students that are of Hispanic heritage.  Applicants must be U.S. Citizens or a legal Permanent Resident; maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0; have earned at least 12 undergraduate units in the U.S. or Puerto Rico; and be enrolled full-time in a degree-seeking program at an accredited U.S. college or university.

Sho Sato Memorial Scholarship

Sho Sato, a Professor of Law at the University of California at Berkeley, was one of the nation's most prominent scholars of local governmental law.  Mr. Sato was known as a leading figure in promoting relations between law schools in Japan and the United States. The Imelda Rosenthal Memorial Scholarship awards a $1,000 scholarship to law students graduating in the 2006-2008 academic year to help cover the costs of fees and related expenses for taking the California Bar Exam. Michael F. O'Donnell Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship fund was established to honor the memory of Michael F. O'Donnell who was recognized as a brillant litigator distinguished by the qualities of supreme decency, honesty, humility and humanity. This fund will award scholarships to students currently enrolled in law school or pursuing a law-related career. Sonoma County Women-In-Law Scholarship

The Sonoma County Women-In-Law Scholarship was established by the 2001 Board of Directors.  The scholarship is funded by the Women-In-Law treasury, donations from private individuals, and benefits.  The purpose is to award a scholarship annually to a law student to assist him or her in the completion of their education. The following attributes are considered in selecting a scholarship recipient: Sonoma County resident, academic achievement, financial need, second or third year law student, and demonstrated interest in promotoing equal opportunity and justice for all women.

Elaine Osborne Jacobson Award For Women Working in Health Care Law

The award was established in honor of Elaine Osborne Jacobson, an advocate for the health care needs of under-served populations. The award recognizes women law students with an aptitude for and commitment to a career of advocacy for the health care needs of women, children, the elderly, and disabled persons. John Scully, USF Law School class of 1991, was killed during the 101 California Street massacre in 1993 at the age of 33. The John C.
