JD Admissions
Admission Procedure
The School of Law begins accepting applications for the following academic
year after September 1 of each year. Applications are considered for admission
in the order completed. The Committee on Admission will not consider any application
until all required information and documentation has been received by the School
of Law. Applicants are encouraged to submit all supporting documents, including
recommendations and appraisal forms, as soon as possible. Because the Committee
on Admission uses a rolling admission system and typically begins the review
process in December, applicants whose files are completed later during the application
period may jeopardize their chances for admission.
Applicants, and those interested in applying, are urged to visit the School
of Law. The School of Law holds periodic information open houses and tours.
All inquiries regarding the open houses as well as other admission questions
should be directed to the Office of Admissions.
First-Year Applicants
Applicants for the entering class are accepted for the fall semester only.
Applicants must indicate on the application form whether they wish to apply
for the full-time or the part-time degree program; an applicant may not apply
to both programs. Applicants for the entering class should carefully follow
all directions contained in the instructions accompanying the application form.
Any applicant who has ever registered at another law school must have a letter
of good standing submitted by that law school. In the event that the applicant
sat for any examinations at any other law school, an official transcript and
class rank are also required. After processing by the Committee on Admission,
successful applicants will be notified of the decision and required to pay an
acceptance deposit. The deposit is neither waived nor deferred under any circumstances.
In the event the applicant registers, this non-refundable deposit is credited
in full toward tuition charges for the fall semester of the year of admission.
Successful applicants must furnish an official copy of a final transcript of
pre-legal work showing receipt of a baccalaureate degree and completion of any
work in progress when the application was filed.
Visiting / Non-Matriculating Applicants
A student enrolled in another law school accredited by the American Bar Association
who wishes to take up to one year of courses at the School of Law may apply
for admission as a visiting or non-matriculating student. Visiting applicants
are accepted for the fall and spring terms.
Transfer Applicants
An individual who has earned a baccalaureate degree and who has completed one
full year of study at a law school accredited by the American Bar Association
may apply for admission with advanced standing. In order to be considered, the
applicant must provide certification from the previous law school that he or
she is in good academic standing and unconditionally eligible to continue his
or her studies. A student who has been academically disqualified at another
law school, or who is barred from advancing with his or her class, will not
be considered. Admission with advanced standing is based primarily upon the
applicant’s prior law school performance and class standing. Upon acceptance,
the Academic Dean will determine the amount of credit to be allowed for work
completed at other institutions, up to a maximum of 30 units. Credit will be
based on quality of performance and the relation of courses completed to the
curricular program of the School of Law. Transfer applicants are accepted for
the fall term only.
Reapplying First Year Applicants
Individuals who have previously attended and/or applied to the School of Law
and wish to reapply may do so. Reapplying applicants should carefully follow
all directions contained in the instructions accompanying the application form.
Concurrent Degree Program Applicants-JD/MBA
An applicant seeking admission to the concurrent degree program must complete
the application process for both the School of Law and the USF School of Business
and Management. Business courses completed prior to admission to the School
of Law are not transferable for credit toward the Juris Doctor degree.
