Mar. 12, 2008 -- Bay Area Lawyers for Individual Freedom (BALIF) honored USF School of Law's Pride Law association with its Law Student Association of the Year Award on Feb. 28.

"Our theme this year was 'Unity in Community,' and USF embodied it perfectly," said Natalie Leonard, a BALIF board member. "The members found time in their busy schedules to holistically improve conditions not only for LGBT students, but for all students on campus. Students showed their pride and strength in community in the most complete and effective way we've frankly ever seen."

Founded in 1980, BALIF is the nation's oldest and largest regional bar association of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, and transgendered persons in the field of law. The award was presented by retired Judge LaDoris Cordell.

Examples of Pride Law's outreach include a "Coming Out Day" CLE event in October, work on a university-wide non-discrimination policy for faculty members, and participation in the Lavender Law career fair. "Everyone, from the Dean's Office and faculty to other student organizations, is very supportive. We couldn't do what we do without that," said Cameron Cloar 2L, who serves as co-chair of Pride Law with Ana Christian 2L.

"It was really great to hear the loud cheers when USF was announced the winner," said Daniel P. Dean '92, a member of both the law school's Board of Governors and the BALIF board. "Pride Law is clearly carrying out the school's mission by contributing so substantially to equal rights, social justice, and diversity."

Pride Law members Collin Baker, Alexis Kent, Geoff Lewis, Cristhian Escobar, Kara Korbel-Chinula, Jen Chung, Danielle Tizol, and Will Birnie attended the dinner, along with a host of USF law alumni.
