New Students Welcomed to USF

Thomas Brandi ’72, speaker at Aug. 19 orientation dinner.
Aug. 18, 2008 -- Students new to the USF School of Law will begin the academic year with a number of welcoming activities and support services this week (Aug. 19 to Aug. 22).

Orientation will start with an overview to the JD program on Tuesday. Tuesday evening, first-year students are invited to join faculty and staff at the orientation dinner in McLaren Hall. The dinner will feature Thomas Brandi '72, head of the Brandi Law Firm in San Francisco and adjunct professor at the law school. Brandi has represented clients throughout the state and country, and received numerous awards, including resolutions from the California State Senate and Assembly.

Throughout orientation week, students will meet for an introduction to the Tort Law and Legal Research, Writing, and Analysis courses; to participate in an academic skills workshop; and to discuss bias in the study and practice of law. On Thursday, meetings with second- and third-year student leaders will provide new students the opportunity to ask questions and familiarize themselves with the law school.

On Friday new students are encouraged to attend the Information Fair in McLaren 250. The relaxed gathering allows first-year students to socialize together, as well as meet upper division law students and members of the law school community. Law school administrative offices, student organizations, and several main campus offices will be present to provide information and answer questions.

The week concludes with various community volunteer opportunities, organized by USF's Law In Motion (LIM) program. Activities include serving meals at St. Anthony's Foundation, habitat restoration and landscape maintenance in local parks, and food sorting and packing at the San Francisco Food Bank.
