Knudsen Awarded 2007 Transitional Student Scholarship

The recipient Nicole Knudsen 1L
Former teachers, social workers, researchers, government employees, and an airline mechanic have attended law school with the help of the USF Women Lawyers Committee (WLC) scholarship for transitional students. First-year students who have experienced at least a five-year break in their education, either between high school and college or college and law school, are eligible for the partial-tuition scholarship.

At the WLC's fall 2007 networking and award reception, Justice Barbara J.R. Jones, Presiding Justice of the Court of Appeal for the First Appellate District, Division 5, awarded the 20th anniversary scholarship to Nicole Knudsen 1L. Following her 2000 graduation from USF with a degree in politics and an emphasis in peace and justice studies, Knudsen provided direct services to homeless families, worked as a case manager for adults with developmental disabilities, and participated in service projects throughout Central America and Asia.

Justice Barbara J.R. Jones

Justice Jones recalled the founding mothers of the WLC and their desire to maintain the close ties they had formed with other women during law school. Before attending law school, Jones herself worked as a teacher, an editor, and an executive secretary to a U.S. congressman, making her the perfect choice to present the scholarship.

Beyond nurturing the camaraderie of the women alumnae of USF law school and awarding the annual scholarship, the WLC provides guidance and support for current law students through a growing mentorship program.

Sedgwick, Detert, Moran & Arnold LLP sponsored the event, which also featured remarks by WLC leader Yuliya Oryol '96, a partner with Nossaman Guthner Knox & Elliott LLP, and Dean Jeffrey S. Brand.

All women graduates of the USF School of Law are automatically members of the WLC, but must attend at least two meetings in the previous 12 month period to become a voting member. For more information, please contact Erica Levison, Office of Development at 415.422.5457 or lawdevelopment@usfca.edu
