Symposium Explores Corporate Responsibility
Mar. 28, 2008 -- Approximately 100 people gathered in Kendrick Hall April 4 for the 2008 Journal of Law and Social Challenges Symposium, "The Future of Corporate Accountability and Oversight." The symposium evaluated the future of U.S. corporate responsibility and discussed how policy, law, and the judiciary can influence corporate oversight.
The symposium began with a keynote address by California Supreme Court Justice Carlos R. Moreno, who said such events "help ensure we critically examine the nature of corporations both here and abroad."
Various panelists addressed three areas of focus: socially responsible investment practices, corporate social responsibility in the manufacturing and labor sector, and key issues relating to the extractive industry overseas, including human rights and government contracts, security personnel, and community relations. Extractive operations for natural resources like oil, timber, or minerals are increasingly associated with violent conflict. The event concluded with a round table in which panelists evaluated new trends, best practices, and the role of corporate responsibility in today's world. "It's too simple of an answer to leave corporate accountability to corporations themselves," said panelist Bennett Freeman, senior vice president Calvert Group.
The Journal of Law and Social Challenges (JLSC) is a student-run publication dedicated to examining social justice on a local and global level. Each year, the JLSC holds a symposium to address a different social justice issue.
