Donation of Rare Books Enhances Library Collection

Harold Boucher (middle) presented several rare books from his collection to Zief Law Library Associate Dean Margaret Arnold and USF School of Law Dean Jeff Brand.

Jan. 31, 2008 -- Zief Law Library is now home to several antiquarian books dating to the 1600s thanks to a donation from Harold Boucher.

Boucher has donated his personal copies of Sir Edward Coke's The Third Part of the Institutes of the Laws of England: Concerning High Treason and Other Pleas of the Crown and Criminal Causes, published in 1660. Boucher has also donated The Law of Testaments and Last Wills (Richardson, 1744) and Ancient Law, Its Connection with the Early History of Society and its Relation to Modern Ideas (Maine, 1864).

Boucher, age 101, visited campus on Jan. 28 with friend Thomas Klitgaard '56 to present the books to Dean Jeffrey Brand and Zief Library Associate Dean Margaret Arnold.

"These books are a wonderful addition to our rare books collection at Zief, and we are grateful to have received the materials," Arnold said.

In addition, Boucher donated his copy of J.H. Baker's The Common Law Tradition (2000), and several of monographs prepared by him on the topic of estate planning.
