"The creation of the Institute is the culmination
of my 35 years of teaching at USF, my research and writing and my work
in the field. I am honored that USF has chosen to designate the new IP
and Technology Law Institute in my name. The McCarthy Institute is the
focus of the IP program at USF and is dedicated to bringing together practitioners,
scholars and students interested in IP and Cyberlaw and related fields."

The technology revolution has made intellectual property,
cyberlaw and other high tech-related issues the hottest topics at American
law schools. Almost every law school offers courses in the area, and many
claim some sort of concentration. The critical difference, however, is
that USF's faculty and students have been involved in this field for decades.
For 35 years, Professor J. Thomas McCarthy has served on the faculty.
An intellectual property law pioneer, today Professor McCarthy is recognized
as a pre-eminent expert in the field. In 1999, the American Intellectual
Property Law Association named Professor McCarthy the most influential
trademark expert of the 20th Century. Throughout his tenure, Professor
McCarthy has taught numerous courses on intellectual property law, copyright
law, and related subjects. In the process, he has mentored numerous students
who have gone on to become some of the most senior and prominent members
of the growing intellectual property bar.
The strong foundation of Professor McCarthy's work has expanded into
a multi-faceted Intellectual Property/Cyberlaw/Technology program at the
USF School of Law - a program that includes: a distinguished faculty,
a comprehensive curriculum with an international perspective, innovative
clinical offerings, a vibrant student organization, a nationally-recognized
student publication, and, now, the J. Thomas McCarthy Institute for Intellectual
Property and Technology Law.
USF'S Intellectual Property and Cyberlaw program is built on the same
foundation that supports all of the law school's work - a faculty of dedicated
teachers and accomplished scholars committed to quality education.
