Concentrations
With additions to its faculty and expansions to the curriculum, USF now offers
several programs in IP and cyberlaw, all of which are designed to enrich students'
academic experience and enhance their practical skills.
Intellectual Property/Cyberlaw Certificate - J.D. Program
The law school offers a 15 credit certificate of concentration in intellectual
property and cyberlaw in the J.D. program. Students are required to take at least
six units of "core" IP/Cyberlaw courses and at least nine units of related
courses to qualify for the certificate. They must also meet minimum GPA requirements.
Clinics and Externships
The Internet and Intellectual Property Justice Project harnesses the energy and
expertise of the law school's Intellectual Property students to provide a unique
clinical experience for students and services to parties who need help with domain
name disputes, as well as other intellectual property issues. These services are
primarily available to those who cannot afford to pay private counsel. The Project
represents individuals or businesses in online arbitrations. The Project also
represents clients involved in copyright infringement disputes under the Digital
Millennium Copyright Act of 1998, as well as other trademark and copyright work
that the faculty supervisors feel is appropriate.
In addition, USF places interested students in summer externships in IP-related
practices. For example, students have worked in IP firms as far away as Brazil
under the direction of distinguished Brazilian attorneys.
Master of Laws in Intellectual Property and Technology Law
USF offers a master of laws program in Intellectual Property and Technology
Law ("IP LL.M."). This degree program is available to both international
and domestic applicants interested in pursuing advanced study in intellectual
property law and related fields. The program can be completed on a full-time
or part-time basis. USF offers many courses in intellectual property and cognate
fields. The IP LL.M. program includes a special seminar, open only to LL.M.
students, and special programs for international students.
For more information please contact: Assistant Director, LL.M. Programs, USF
School of Law, 2130 Fulton Street, San Francisco, CA 94117, or visit our IP
LL.M. web site at: www.usfca.edu/law/ipllm.
The Students
Intellectual Property Law Students Association (IPLA)
Students who are interested in practicing IP and cyberlaw may join the Intellectual
Property Law Students Association (IPLA). At IPLA meetings, students are introduced
to local IP and cyberlaw attorneys who describe their practices and provide
students with knowledge about the real world of practice.
Intellectual Property Law Bulletin
Law Students may edit and write articles for a student-run journal called the
USF Intellectual Property Law Bulletin. The Bulletin features articles on various
cutting edge issues written primarily by IP practitioners.
