The Future of Corporate Accountability and Oversight
On April 4, 2008, the Journal of Law and Social Challenges hosted a symposium titled The Future of Corporate Accountability and Oversight. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is defined as "the continuing commitment by business to behave ethically and contribute to economic development while improving the quality of life of the workforce and their families as well as of the local community and society at large." The extent to which social responsibilities should be made legally enforceable remains a matter of considerable debate.
Our symposium sought to address these issues in a one-day event held on April 4, 2008, from 12:00 to 5:30 p.m. Speakers representing various stakeholders, lawyers, and academics engaged in discussion, specifically relating to the investment, extractive, and manufacturing and labor sectors. These experts evaluated current law and policy, and in a final roundtable, provided their cogent observations about how the future landscape of private sector oversight should evolve in this country.
