Academics and Global Perspective

The USF School of Law offers a rigorous education with a global perspective. Equipped with a strong conceptual understanding of the law and intense training in practical legal skills, USF graduates are ready to hit the ground running.

An accomplished faculty of dedicated teachers and noted scholars is the foundation of the USF School of Law's academic program. Our professors are respected authors, researchers, and legal theorists and foster a vibrant intellectual community at USF.

Professor Maria Ontiveros | JD, Harvard University

"USF's combination of rigorous academic discipline and concern for real-world problems makes it an ideal place for someone who truly wants to make a difference in the world."

Our full-time and part-time JD programs empower students to develop their analytical abilities, master legal writing and research skills, acquire a firm foundation of basic law, explore an array of specialties, and refine their skills in a practical setting.

Certificate programs and elective courses offer concentrated study for students who wish to pursue particular career objectives or develop specialized skills. USF offers a noted program in intellectual property and cyberlaw, which includes a certificate option, a law clinic, and a research institute. For those pursuing business law, we offer a certificate and a concurrent JD/MBA degree program.

Our innovative international law program includes courses, study abroad opportunities, and internships that circle the globe. Students that participate in the Frank C. The Center for Law and Global Justice develops and implements international rule-of-law projects.

USF also offers a LLM in International Transactions and Comparative Law for foreign lawyers, and a LLM in Intellectual Property and Technology Law for foreign and U.S. lawyers.

Steve Blake | Class of 2008

"I knew I wanted to attend a law school where I could focus entirely on learning the law. I found that at USF with the support of fellow students and the aid of dedicated faculty."

USF prepares students to practice law by offering internships, judicial externships, and innovative clinical programs in which students gain practical experience. These include the USF Law Clinic, an in-house teaching law firm that handles real cases for clients pro bono; the Clinical Externship Program, which gives students the opportunity to put their education into practice at local law firms, legal departments, and public interest and government agencies; and the Judicial Externship Program.

Students expand their scholarly interests by writing, editing, and publishing several law journals, including the USF Law Review, the USF Maritime Law Journal, and the Intellectual Property Law Bulletin. These journals host frequent symposia exploring paramount legal issues of today and the future.
