Hanoi & Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

4 units | The program will begin with a week of instruction at Hanoi Law University from English-speaking Vietnamese law professors and lawyers on the legal system in Vietnam, including trips to legal and cultural institutions such as Ba Dinh Square, Duong Lam Ancient Village, and the Hoa Lo Prison. The next four (plus) weeks will be spent working in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City in international commercial law firms representing Vietnamese and overseas investors in contract, regulatory, intellectual property, trade, securities, and real property issues, and in NGOs or at the UN, working on strengthening the rule of law in Vietnam.

Past and possible placements include Baker & McKenzie, DAI, Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam, Duane Morris, LCT Lawyers, Mayer Brown JSM, Nhquang & Associates, Star Vietnam Project, Tilleke & Gibbins Consultants, Ltd., the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and YKVN Lawyers (a White & Case affiliate).

Manila, Philippines

4 units | This international externship program is offered in conjunction with the Ateneo Law School in Manila. Externships are preceded by one week of orientation including classroom instruction and visits to legal institutions such as the Supreme Court and the Senate. Students placements will be in commercial law and in human rights.

Past placements have included Ateneo International Human Rights Center; Angara Abello Concepcion Regala & Cruz Law Offices; Director of the Dept. of Justice; Government Commission on Anti-Corruption; Office of the Solicitor General; Romulo, Mabanta, Buenaventura, Syaoc & Delos Angeles; and Sycip Salazar Law Firm.

USF Summer 2015 Director: Professor Jack Garvey

Beijing, China

4 units | The program will begin with a week of instruction at Beijing Foreign Studies University School of Law. The lectures will be given by English-speaking Chinese law professors and lawyers on various aspects of the Chinese legal system, including the Constitution, Labor and Employment, Corporations and Business, Human Rights, Law and Society, Foreign Direct Investments, Intellectual Property, and Economic Crimes. Students will spend the next four weeks working at an international or local Chinese law firm specializing in cross-border commercial transactions or intellectual property.

Past and possible placements include Bingham McCutchen, DLA Piper; King & Wood Law Firm; Morgan Lewis; Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton LLP; Unitalen, and Wan Hui Da.
