Asian Externships

Beijing & Shanghai, China - July 8 to August 9, 2013

4 units |  The program will begin with a week of instruction from English-speaking Chinese law professors and lawyers on the legal system of China, with emphasis on international business law and intellectual property law. The next four weeks will be spent in Beijing or Shanghai international business law firms, most of which specialize in IP law. One externship is in a non-profit corporation specializing in the teaching and promotion of Chinese IP law. Interns must file weekly e-mail reports with the USF Program Director and the clinical externships will culminate in a 20-page paper. The timing of the China program allows for the students to go on to the three-week program in Prague should they wish to do so. Students will live in an hotel, guesthouse of furnished apartments (Housing cost will be around $1,000 for 5 weeks). The clinical legal work will culminate in a 20-page paper.

Hanoi & Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam - June 2 to July 6, 2013

4 units |  Participating students work in NGOs, such as the U.S. Agency for International Development, and international commercial law firms representing Vietnamese and overseas investors in contract, regulatory, intellectual property, trade, securities, and real property issues.  Students are required to submit weekly email reports on externship activities and a 20-page paper that demonstrates what they learned about the practice of law in Vietnam.

Phnom Penh, Cambodia - May 21 to June 26, 2013

4 units |  This externship program will provide position with U.N. agencies, international human rights NGOs and NGOs specializing in international development and the rule of law. Most of the NGOs receive USAID funding. Many of the externships involve international humanitarian/criminal law related to the Khmer Rouge International Tribunal currently underway. The program commences with a week of orientation to the Cambodian legal system and international humanitarian and human rights law. The orientation is at the Royal University of Law and Economics (RULE) and will be taught by English-speaking Khmer (Cambodian) law professors and lawyers. The orientation will be followed by 4 weeks of externships, which will culminate in a 20-page paper. Students may stay longer if they wish. 

Manila, Philippines - June 17 to July 14, 2013

 4 units | This international externship program is offered in conjunction with the Ateneo Law School in Manila. Externships are preceded by one week of orientation including classroom instruction and visits to legal institutions such as the Supreme Court and the Senate. Students placements will be in Commercial Law and in Human Rights. Professor Jack Garvey coordinates the externship program. The clinical legal work will culminate in a 20-page paper.

Bangalore, India - Not offered in 2013

4 units |  This international externship program is offered in conjunction with the National Law School of India University (NLSIU). Externships are preceded by one week of orientation including classroom instruction on the Indian legal system and visits to Bangalore's historic courts and Parliament. Students will receive a course certificate in Indian Law and Legal Systems from NLSIU, India's leading law school. Students then work as law clerks for four weeks in Bangalore, the home of India's high-tech industry. The externships will be at international business law firms, NGOs, and government agencies. The clinical legal work will culminate in a 20-page paper. Students will live in furnished apartments with daily maid service (Housing cost: $900 to $1,900 for 5 weeks).
