Career Planning for Current Students
OCP provides students and alumni with 24-hour access to www.usflawlink.com. This site is a portal for job listings, recruiting information, and employer information. It also contains a document library which houses many of the handouts the OCP produces and program information. We encourage you to check the site often as job opportunities, program and event details, and employer information are updated on an on-going basis.
Each OCP director provides individualized career counseling. As experienced counselors, the Directors are prepared to provide guidance in career choices, resume and cover letter review, selection of references and writing samples, job search strategy, interviewing skills development, and networking/informational interviewing preparation. These law career professionals will also assist you during critical job search decisions such as helping you determine which offer to accept or decline, how to negotiate a higher salary or other benefits, and other issues which may arise during your search. We can also assist you with selecting courses and law school clinics, as well as civil, criminal, and judicial externships.

Before major recruiting events begin in both the Fall and Spring semesters, the Office of Career Planning holds a Mock Interview program to prepare students for the interview season. OCP enlists volunteer attorneys and alums, representative of the type of employers that recruit USF students, to interview students on campus and provide helpful feedback and advice. Sign-ups are required and slots fill quickly so students should keep an eye out for event announcements.
Co-Sponsoring an Event with the OCP
Representatives from registered student organizations may contact OCP to seek co-sponsorship for events related to career planning. Typical events would include those that focus on job search skills, and information sessions on practice areas.
Co-sponsorship may include:
- Use of OCP reserved Classroom Space
OCP has reserved classroom space on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 4 p.m. to 6:20 p.m. for career-related events. If OCP will not be using the reserved space for an event the room will be available for use by student organizations. The student organization will first approach the Registrar's Office to inquire about room availability, and then approach OCP to get permission to use the reserved room.
- Assistance in Securing Guest Speakers
Due to the networking skills involved in researching and contacting guest speakers, student organizations are encouraged to investigate and initiate contact on their own. When time and resources allow, OCP may assist student organizations in identifying and contacting guest speakers. The organizations should approach OCP as far in advance of the planned event date as possible.
- Assistance in Securing Parking Permits for Guest Speakers
OCP may assist student organizations with the purchase of guest parking passes. OCP may pay for the costs of the permit and work with the Public Safety Office to order the permits. Student organizations should give OCP 3-4 working days to secure these permits.
- Food Expenses
Please review the "Catering" policy for on-campus events. OCP may assist student organizations with reasonable food expenses for career-related events. The level of support will depend on the number of students expected to attend the event, and the type of food the student organization plans to order. In advance of the event, student organizations should submit a request to OCP, detailing the event's purpose, date, time, location, anticipated attendance, and anticipated costs. Students may request reimbursement for out-of-pocket expenses. Note: Itemized receipts are required. To avoid out-of-pocket expenses, student organizations are encouraged to discuss event logistics with OCP staff well in advance of the event. For eligible events, students are encouraged to use vendors that will accept VISA.
Student organizations should take the lead on advertising co-sponsored events. Please review the policies under "Bulletin Boards," "Event Calendar," "Email Announcements through USFconnect," and "Posting Policy." Student groups should make every effort to ensure adequate student attendance at events featuring guest speakers. This includes making an effort to avoid scheduling conflicts by reviewing the event calendar. OCP may assist in advertising efforts as well. Events that are co-sponsored by OCP should be advertised as such (e.g., "The Business Law Association and the Office of Career Planning Present")
Funding for Law Conference/Event Registration Fees
Limited funding is available for students and student organizations for registration fees for conferences and events that provide organized job fairs, interviewing opportunities, and other networking events that are clearly organized with the intent to provide law students with meaningful opportunities to interact with potential employers. Funding for registration fees for other types of events with demonstrable potential for networking or career development will be considered on a case by case basis. Funding requests for other costs associated with attending the conference or event may be requested from the Deans' Office. Please refer to the section in this guide titled "Funding from the Deans' Office" for more information.
Students and student organizations should consult with the Director of Career Planning about the request. After consultation, the student or student organization must submit a written request with the following information:
- Name(s) of students that will attend and, if applicable, the name of the sponsoring student organization
- E-mail addresses, phone numbers, and year of all students that will attend
- Copy of the registration form for the event, or hyperlink to the registration Web site
- Supporting documents (e.g., brochure, agenda or hyperlink to the event's Web site), and
- If the program, agenda, or Web site includes information about an organized job fair or interviewing opportunity for law students, no further supporting documentation is needed. For all other events, the student or student organization must prepare a brief statement that explains how the event will provide the attendees with meaningful opportunities to interact with potential employers.
Requests for funding must be approved by the Director of the Office of Career Planning. Most, if not all, funds awarded by OCP are paid through reimbursement. If funding is awarded, details on obtaining the funding will be provided by the Director of OCP. Students are encouraged to request funding early in the registration timeline to minimize costs. Students that can demonstrate an early commitment to attend (e.g., airline and/or hotel reservation confirmation) may be able to avoid the reimbursement process by having OCP pay the registration costs directly. This will only be available for those conferences and events that accept VISA for payment of registration fees.
Please note that funds are limited. Budget constraints may limit OCP's ability to fund the registration fees for these types of events. Please note that prior approvals do not guarantee subsequent approvals for similar events.

Office of Career Planning Advisory Board
The Office of Career Planning Advisory Board is comprised of students, faculty, and adjunct professors, who support OCP in developing and implementing effective policies and procedures along with providing input on issues that affect OCP services and programs. Student representatives from each class level are appointed by the Student Bar Association.
Student Business Cards
The Deans' Office of the University of San Francisco School of Law has worked with the University's Purchasing Department to allow currently enrolled law students the option of purchasing business cards with the University logo through the Student Bar Association. The SBA in conjunction with the Office of Career Planning will be administrating this program.
The University of San Francisco School of Law does not allow student business cards (with the University logo) to be made outside of this program. Please note, this program is for the benefit of all students and is a privilege that may be taken away if abused.
To comply with the University's guidelines, all orders for business cards must be placed through the Office of Career Planning at the beginning of fall semester.
The business cards will contain the student's name, candidacy and expected year of graduation (i.e., J.D. Candidate 2009, LL.M. Candidate 2008), and contact information (including mailing address, home phone number, cell phone number, fax number, USF email address, and link to LinkedIn profile).
- Advanced graduate degrees may be listed using initials after the students name (e.g., John Doe, MSEE). Upon submission of supporting documentation, students admitted to the Patent Bar may list the designation on the line directly under the J.D. Candidate line (e.g., Patent Agent). No titles or other designations are permitted.
- Using the University's address of 2130 Fulton Street is not allowed.
- USF campus phone and fax numbers may not be listed.
- When listing an email address, students must use their USF campus email account (e.g., email@example.com). We will also allow you to use one personal email address, in addition to your USF campus email account, provided your personal email address is not unprofessional or inappropriate for a USF business card.
- You will be given a proof of your business card. You must initial for verification that all the information on the business card is correct and also pay for your business cards in full before your order can be placed.
