Academics
At USF, we are dedicated to providing the finest available legal education. Our
extensive curriculum requires every student to master the fundamentals of law.
It does not, however, concentrate on the legal rules effective in any one jurisdiction
or geographic area. Rather, the emphasis is on development of analytical ability
and other essential skills of an effective attorney, along with full awareness
of a lawyer’s special obligations to society.
A strong faculty interest in students and in teaching sets USF apart from many
law schools. Faculty members are especially accessible, and make particular
effort outside the classroom to engage students in legal, as well as political,
ethical, philosophical, and social discussion. The faculty and administration
are committed to enhancing each student’s personal development and make
every effort to create a challenging but supportive environment in which each
student may grow as a professional and as an individual.
Many classes focus on lawyering skills, and students are encouraged to obtain
practical experience. Special concern for high professional standards and ethics
is reflected throughout the curriculum in courses relating the technical aspects
of law to humanistic needs.
The School of Law integrates with its educational program the cultural diversity
and needs of the community of which it is such a vital part. For this reason,
the curriculum includes a focus on contemporary issues and the law related conflicts
of our complex society. At the same time, we recognize the “globalization”
of law and law practice and the school’s unique setting in San Francisco,
a gateway to the Pacific Rim. To accommodate the changing range of practice
and application of laws, the curriculum encompasses programs and courses designed
to prepare graduates for international law and for different approaches to decision-making
and dispute resolution.
