James Stormes, SJ
Lo Schiavo Chair in Catholic Studies and Social Thought
Jim Stormes, SJ serves as Lo Schiavo Chair in Catholic Studies and Social Thought, a joint appointment between the department of theology and religious studies and the Lane Center. Jim brings to USF decades of leadership experience in Jesuit social ministries. Most recently, he held the position of Secretary for Social and International Ministries at the Jesuit Conference in Washington, DC. In this role, he worked to bridge the research and analysis of Jesuit universities worldwide with the on-the-ground direct service and advocacy efforts of local social service agencies. Prior to his appointment to the Jesuit Conference, Jim served as provincial of the Maryland Province of Jesuits. Jim has a Masters in Latin American Studies from the University of Texas at Austin and a Ph.D. in economics from the Unviersity of Massachusetts Amherst. He taught economics at St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia.

Mike joined the University of San Francisco University Ministry staff in 1996 as associate director where he directed several of USF’s most prominent social justice programs including the Arrupe Immersion Program, the Justice Lecture Series, and the Peace and Justice Coalition. Especially notable have been the figures Mike has brought to campus as part of the Justice Lecture Series, including Nobel Peace Prize Laureates Shirin Ebadi, Oscar Arias, Adolfo Perez Esquivel, Rigoberta Menchu Tum, Mairead Corrigan Maguire, and Jody Williams; Sr. Helen Prejean, C.S.J., Author of Dead Man Walking; and mostly recently, Dr. Paul Farmer. Mike also founded the USF Arrupe Immersion Program bringing faculty, staff and students to marginalized populations in Belize, Guatemala, Cuba, Peru, Mexico, El Salvador, India, and Vietnam. Mike received his doctoral degree in education from USF in 2005. His dissertation entitled Directives within Catholic Social Teaching for the Promotion of Justice through Educational Activities was published in 2008. In 2003 Duffy was given the Fr. William Dunne Award by university president Fr. Stephen A. Privett, S.J., the university’s highest award for staff service, as well as the Peacemakers Award by the university's Peace & Justice Coalition. An adjunct faculty member, Mike teaches in USF's Erasmus Project residential learning community and teaches a seminar in Catholic social thought. Mike is a member of the board of the Jesuit Volunteer Corps: Southwest and the California Province Mission & Vision Committee. |

Julia is the Associate Director of the Joan and Ralph Lane Center
for Catholic Studies and Social Thought at the University of San Francisco (USF). For two years prior she was the Program Development Coordinator
of the Leo T. McCarthy Center for Public Service and the Common Good also at USF. Before coming to USF, Julia was the Director of Social Ministries at St. Ignatius Church, a Jesuit parish in
San Francisco. From 1994-95 she was a member of the Jesuit Volunteer Corps where
she worked as a case manager at the Hamilton Family Center, a shelter for homeless
families in San Francisco. Julia received her bachelor's degree in religious studies with a
concentration in peace and conflict studies from the College of the Holy Cross
in 1994, an MA in theology from USF
in 2000 and a masters in nonprofit administration (MNA) from USF in 2004. She has served on the boards of the Jesuit
Volunteer Corps: Southwest (2004-2006), the Ignatian
Solidarity Network (2004-present) and the Mission and Vision Committee of the California Province of the Society of Jesus (1999-2003; 2008-present). |
