ITS FAQs - Windows XP, 2000: Accesing University Fileshares from a non-USF connection (dsl, cablemodem, other dial-up)
|
| |
- Click on the Start menu.
- Right click on My Network Places.
- Left click on Properties.
- Your Network Connections Windows will open up. Look for your DSL or LAN connection icon. Right mouse click on top of the appropriate icon.
- Click on Properties (in the submenu that appears).
- Click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) to select it, and then click on the Properties button (see image below).

- Once the Internet Protocol window appears, click on the Advanced button and then click on the WINS tab. This will open the TCP/IP WINS Server window. You should not see any WINS addresses listed yet; you will need to add them.

- To add the WINS addresses, click on the Add button, then type in 138.202.96.4 and then click Add. (see image below).

- Click Add one more time and this time enter in 138.202.175.4 and then click Add. You should now see both addresses listed in the WINS addresses section. Once you confirm both addresses are listed, click OK until all the open windows are gone (should be 3 times). The computer may seem to stop responding for a moment but this is ok, it's just changing the properties. If you are asked to reboot, go ahead and do so.
- Once the computer is ready (or after it has restarted), make sure you are online (like open Internet Explorer and make sure you get a webpage). Then click on the Start menu, select Run. Depending on which fileserever you are attempting to access enter one of the following:
- Students wanted to access the Donna Drive and their H:drive folders: \\donna.usfca.edu
- Students or Faculty wanting to access the Donna Drive and their G:drive folders: \\donna.usfca.edu
- Staff or Faculty wanting to access the Jade File Server: \\jade.usfca.edu
- After entering the server name, click OK. Since you are on a non-USF connection the time it takes to contact our server will vary, so just be patient. You should eventually see a login screen. Where it says username, enter accounts\username where username is your USF username (i.e. jdsmith). In the password field enter you network password (this is the password you use to access computers while on campus. It may or may not be the same as your USFconnect/email password). Click Ok.
