What is PubNet?
PubNet is a publicly accessible network designed for use with network-ready laptops (i.e., equipped with an Ethernet adapter). Users must use their LAN username and password (usually the same as USFconnect) to login before communications are allowed outside the local network to the Internet.
PubNet is currently available in the Gleeson Library, Dorraine Zief Law Library and Sacramento Regional Campus Library.
Who can use PubNet?
USF faculty, staff and registered students are authorized to use PubNet.
How can PubNet be accessed?
Your computer must meet the following requirements:
- Network Hardware: 10base-T Ethernet card with Cat 5e Ethernet cable (minimum 5-foot)
- Operating System: Windows 95 or later or Mac OS Version 7.1 or later
- Software: Netscape Navigator 3.0 or later, or Internet Explorer 3.0 or later. The network security option "cookies" must be enabled on your browser software.
- Network Configuration: Network settings must allow for dynamic IP addressing (DHCP).
How do I register to use PubNet?
The first time you access PubNet, you must complete the following registration
procedure:
- Locate a purple-tagged network connection in the appropriate locations, and connect your laptop's Ethernet adapter to the wall jack using your Cat 5e Ethernet cable.
- Start your computer.
- Launch a web browser.
- When prompted, enter your LAN username and password (usually the same as USFconnect).
- Select ‘Yes/OK’ on all pop ups. Note: you may need to allow pop-ups for this to work.
- Once you have been successfully logged in, you will be redirected to your set homepage.
Do I have to login each time I use PubNet?
Yes. If your computer has been left idle for 3 hours or more, or you disconect from the network, you will need to re-login.
Do I have to register my computer each time I use PubNet?
No, you need only register once. Registration, however, is tied to your particular
computer. If you use a different computer, you will need to register again.
Can I have more than one computer registered for PubNet?
Yes, you may register multiple computers on PubNet.
