There are two ways to set up your Windows 2000 or Windows XP computer to access
one of the University's networked printers: directly connecting through the
server or using Active Directory via
the Find Printers Wizard. Both have advantages and disadvantages. At this
time, we recommend you use whichever method you are most comfortable with. As
we develop Active Directory more fully we will begin to encourage our customers
to use the Active Directory method of connecting to networked printers.
Connecting to a Printer Directly through the Server
- Click Start > Run.

- In the Open field, type in \\ followed
by the server name. For example if you wanted to attach to the “kara”
printer server type \\kara. Kara is our primary print server, but there are
print queues also on Regis, MclStaff, etc. You will need to know which server
houses your printer queue if it is not located on Kara.

- Click OK and the server contents will appear, in this
case the printers listed on Kara.
- Once you find the printer you would like to connect to, simply double click
on the printer to install it.
That’s it! Your printer is now installed.
Active Directory Method via the Find Printers
Wizard:
- Click Start > Search > Find Printers.

- The Find Printers search window will appear.

- Make sure that Entire Directory is selected for the In
field. Next, type in the building code into the Name field
and click Find Now to see all printers in a specific building.

- Once you find the printer you want to install, simply double click on it
and the printer will automatically install.
That’s it! Now you will have this printer in your printer list ready
to print.
