ITS FAQs - Eudora & Infected Attachments

Depending on how you have your Eudora configured, you may be having attachments sent to you download automatically to a file on your harddrive, generally stored in your Eudora Folder in a folder called Attach or Attachments. In these cases, simply deleting the e-mail does not automatically delete the attachment.

To completely remove a virus that is an attachment to an e-mail:

PC Users

Step 1: Delete the e-mail without opening the attachment (make note of the attachment's name before deleting).

Step 2: Use Windows Explorer to view the files in Eudora's Attach subdirectory. For many people at USF the path is: C/Program Files/Eudora/Attach. You could also go to the Start Menu and do a find file on the name of the attachment.

Step 3: Find the file named AnnakourniKova.jpg.vbs (or whatever the name of the infected file happens to be) but DO NOT open it or double click on it.

Step 4: Carefully left click on it only once then go the File menu and select Delete.

Step 5: Go to your recycle bin and empty it. This completes the process.

Mac Users

Step 1: Delete the e-mail without opening the attachment (make note of the attachment's name before deleting).

Step 2: Use Sherlock or Find from the File Menu to search on the name of the attachment.

Step 3: From the results list, find the file named AnnakourniKova.jpg.vbs (or whatever the name of the infected file happens to be) but DO NOT open it or double click on it.

Step 4: Carefully click on it only once to select the document and then, from the File Menu, select Move to Trash.

Step 5: Click once on the Trash Can (located on your desktop) and, from the Special Menu, select Empty Trash. This completes the process.
