Supported Hardware for University Owned Equipment

This page contains information related to University owned equipment only. If you are inquiring about personally owned equipment, please visit our page on privately owned computers, which includes recommendations on new purchases, minimum connectivity requirements and other relevant information.

Listed below are the current minimum requirements for hardware supported by ITS. If your University computer does not meet these standards, please contact the ITS Help Desk to determine if your computer has been inventoried and should be included in the annual Replacement Project.

If you are planning to purchase a new computer for the University, please review our University Desktop Computing Standards. All new computers are purchased through ITS Computer Support. We are happy to assist you in making your decisions regarding new hardware purchases.

Desktop / Laptop Minimums Server Minimums

PC Desktop Minimum Requirements

  • Processor: Pentium 4 2.8GHz
  • Windows XP (English only)
  • 512MB of RAM
  • CDRW/DVD combo drive

Laptop Minimum Requirements

  • Processor: Pentium M 1.6GHz
  • Windows XP (English only)
  • 512MB of RAM
  • CDRW/DVD combo drive

Macintosh Desktop Minimum Requirements

  • Processor: G4 1GHz
  • Mac OS X
  • 512MB of RAM
  • CDRW/DVD combo drive

Macintosh Laptop Minimum Requirements

  • Processor: G4 1GHz
  • Mac OS X
  • 512MB of RAM
  • CDRW/DVD combo drive

Windows OS Server Minimum Requirement

Before purchasing a server for your department, refer to the University's Security Policy for details on server management.

NOTE: ITS can assist with initial setup and configuration of servers, but each server must have an assigned administrator to oversee day to day functions. ITS cannot provide this service, due to limited staff. Please contact Micheal Ong at ongm @ usfca.edu if you have any questions regarding server management issues.
