Off-Campus Employment

For F-1 Students
The two types of F-1 off-campus work authorization are Curricular Practical Training (CPT) and Optional Practical Training (OPT).
To work off-campus, F-1 students must apply for one of these work authorizations and obtain approval from an International Student Advisor and/or the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), depending on the circumstances. Working off campus requires special authorization and is available only in certain situations, such as a position required for your program of study (i.e., Curricular Practical Training), Optional Practical Training in your field of study, or severe economic need that has arisen after your entry into the United States.

Students in the Intensive English Program (IEP) are not eligible to work off-campus.

Workshops explaining the Optional Practical Training regulations and application procedures are offered each semester.

For J-1 Students
J-1 students are eligible for eighteen months of academic training employment authorization for off-campus work unless they have spent less time in J-1 status, i.e. an exchange student who is enrolled for only one/two semester(s) can only apply for academic training for a period of time equal to the length of their program. J-1 doctoral students who obtain a "postdoctoral training" position may be eligible for up to 36 months of academic training.

Academic training provides an opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge obtained in an academic program to a practical work experience. This employment opportunity must be directly related to your major field of study. It may, in certain circumstances, be full or part time and may take place anywhere in the United States. You may apply for academic training during your vacation periods, during the academic year, or for when you complete your studies. Academic training can be authorized by the International Student and Scholar Services upon the recommendation of your academic advisor or by your J-1 program sponsor if not sponsored by USF.

For additional information and application materials, please schedule an appointment to meet with an ISSS advisor.
