California Foundation Studies
The Institute for Nonprofit Organization Management specializes
in research documenting the importance of foundations, and their
role in supporting the work of the nonprofit community.
Practices and Policies of California Foundations in Supporting
Grantees' General Operating Costs
Nonprofit organizations relying on restricted grants and contracts
often lack funds for general operating costs such as rent, information
technology, new project development, fundraising, general administration,
and staff development. This research examined foundation policies
and practices concerning foundation support for nonprofits’
general operating expenses.

The Roles and Contributions of Bay Area Foundations
Working in collaboration with UCLA and the University at Seattle,
the Institute is comparing the Bay Area foundation community with
those of Los Angeles and Seattle. This comparison will form a chapter
of a new book to be edited by UCLA and Case Western Reserve University.
We will describe and discuss how the Bay Area foundation community
has served the region, the ways it has interacted with government,
patters of giving affecting the relative efficiency and effectiveness
of foundation funding, and related issues.
