Health Insurance for Undergraduates

Requirement

Population Registered for Requirement
U.S. citizens and permanent residents 1-8 credit hours Not automatically enrolled and charged for insurance. Eligible to purchase USF- sponsored health insurance plan online
U.S. citizens and permanent residents 9+ credit hours

Required. Automatically enrolled and charged for insurance (excluding visiting students, certificate programs, and online programs).

Undergraduate students who are required to have health insurance and all undergraduate International Students will be automatically enrolled and charged for the USF-sponsored health insurance plan.

Undergraduate students who wish to voluntarily enroll in the USF-sponsored health insurance plan online can follow these steps:

  1. Go to the Aetna Member Navigator Website.
  2.  In the left navigation menu, click on "Medical Plan: Enroll."
  3. Click on the submenu "Undergraduate Students."
  4. Click on "Enroll: Undergraduate Students."
  5. Follow the prompts to enter all the necessary information to enroll.
  6. After entering all the necessary information, pay using a Visa or Mastercard.

Opt Out Criteria

 Criteria for waiving the health insurance requirement:

  • Policy must be underwritten by a U.S.-domiciled (U.S.-based) insurance company. 
  • Health plan must offer a maximum benefit of at least $500,000 in coverage per benefit year.
  • Health plan must cover inpatient and outpatient medical care within the San Francisco Bay Area. Note: Emergency-only coverage does not satisfy this requirement.
  • Health plan must cover inpatient and outpatient mental health care within the San Francisco Bay Area. Note: Emergency-only coverage does not satisfy this requirement.
  • Health plan must be active and provide health insurance coverage throughout the academic year.
Instructions on how to submit the waiver:
  1. Go to the waiver application on the  Aetna Navigator Member Website
  2.  In the left navigation menu, click on "Medical Plan: Waive."
  3. Scroll down and click on "Waive: Student Health Insurance Plan."
  4. Follow the prompts to enter all the necessary information for your waiver.

Deadline:

Students who wish to waive the insurance requirement must do so by the deadline. 

  • The Spring 2014 insurance waiver/enrollment application will be available on the Aetna Student Health website beginning Monday, November 18, 2013.
  • The waiver deadline for the Spring 2014 semester is Saturday, February, 1 2014 at 5pm.
