Reaching New Heights

From the Athletic Executive Director

The USF Department of Athletics is committed to creating opportunities for excellence for our student-athletes — giving them the resources they need to be successful both in the classroom and on the playing field. While new to the USF family, I wanted to take this time to articulate the mission, core values and goals of this department as stated in the 2002 Reaching New Heights planning document.

MISSION

In direct support of USF’s vision and mission, USF Athletics:

  • Promotes high academic achievement, strong leadership capability, a concern for others, self-discipline, teamwork and excellence in athletic performance in every student-athlete.

  • Provides the entire University — students, faculty, staff, alumni, parents and friends — with a common bond and source of community pride.

  • Generates positive visibility in the public media and uses this visibility to communicate the University’s vision, mission and values.

USF is committed to giving each student-athlete a fair opportunity to compete.

CORE VALUES

Unquestionable Integrity
As a Catholic Jesuit institution of higher learning, our primary goals are the intellectual and moral development of our students. These commitments are consistently measured by the exceptional graduations rates of our student-athletes and rules compliance by our staff, our student-athletes and our supporters.

Service Minded
As the Department of Athletics, we support and foster the development of the whole person devoted to the pursuit of a common good that transcends the interests of particular individuals or groups.

Focused on Excellence
As a competitive intercollegiate program and a major source of pride for the entire University, winning is a key component. All of our teams will strive to win.

Determined Involvement
Student-athletes play an integral role in the greater University community. Athletic opportunities are vehicles to heighten personal development and when complemented with campus involvement, we believe that the benefits of athletic participation should be available to as many students, faculty, staff and alumni as possible.

GOALS

Goal I:
To comply with both the spirit and letter of the law for West Coast Conference, NCAA, and university guidelines.

Goal II:
To foster Jesuit values in the total development of the student-athletes through academic achievement, engagement in the life of the university community and leadership development.

Goal III:
To set high standard for winning at the conference and national level.

Goal IV:
To enhance the visibility of the university through athletics.

Goal V:
To increase the number of undergraduates actively engaged as participants on athletic teams and support services and, thereby, help achieve the gender equity, student recruitment, and retention goals of the university.

Goal VI:
To serve as a bonding force in the USF community.

Goal VII:
To develop and implement a plan to provide the necessary funding to achieve the established goals.

Your support of USF Athletics is vital to the success of our teams. I look forward to sharing many successful moments with all of those who are involved with our program.

Go Dons!
