Stephen N. Katsouros, S.J., Ed.D.

Director, Institute for Catholic Educational Leadership

In September 2013, Kevin Kumashiro, School of Education Dean at the University of San Francisco (USF), announced his appointment of Fr. Steve Katsouros, S.J., as Associate Dean for Strategic Projects. Fr. Katsouros, a member of the New York Province Society of Jesus (Jesuits), has served as the director of the Institute for Catholic Educational Leadership (ICEL) at USF since 2011. During his tenure as ICEL director, Fr. Katsouros has hosted two conferences for trustees from Catholic higher education and secondary education boards. Entitled "Making Decisions to Sustain Your Mission: A Conference for Trustee Leadership in Catholic Education," the conferences have been attended by over 150 trustees of Catholic colleges, universities, and high schools in the United States and Canada. In addition, ICEL has launched online courses and programs for its masters and doctoral students, and Fr. Katsouros has led a strategic planning process and received the support of several donors for the growth and sustainability of the Institute. He speaks nationally on governance, leadership, and institutional performance to gatherings of trustees and educational leaders.

As Associate Dean for Strategic Projects, Fr. Katsouros provides vision and leadership and assists Dean Kumashiro in the following areas: developing a strategic plan for the School of Education; identifying and soliciting donors to support the School of Education; creating advisory boards for the School; building institutional capacity at the School. Along with his responsibilities as Associate Dean for Strategic Projects, Fr. Katsouros will continue to serve as ICEL's director.

Before his appointment to USF, Fr. Katsouros served as president of Loyola, a coed Jesuit high school on Manhattan's Upper East Side, from 2002 until 2011. During his administration, both Loyola's endowment and the school's annual giving tripled, the financial aid program expanded, faculty and staff salaries exceeded those offered at peer institutions, and the school's physical plant and infrastructure were renovated and upgraded.

Fr. Katsouros has taught on the middle school, high school, undergraduate and graduate school levels, and has served as a service director, dean of student affairs, and development director. He earned his master's degree in administration at Harvard University and his doctorate in organizational leadership at Teachers College Columbia University where he researched the characteristics of effective, high-performing boards of trustees. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1987 and was ordained a Jesuit priest in 1998. He served as the president of the Guild of Independent Schools of New York City and has been a member of many boards. He currently is a trustee at Creighton University, Omaha; Regis University, Denver; and Schools of the Sacred Heart, San Francisco. He also participates on two trustee committees at the University of San Francisco (USF), where, in addition to serving as Associate Dean and directing ICEL, he is a member of USF's president's leadership team.
