Joseph Sargent received a B.A. from the University of Rochester and
an M.A. and Ph.D. from Stanford University, with a dissertation on
the sixteenth-century Spanish Magnificat. He has published and read
papers on various aspects of sacred Renaissance music in England
and Spain, as well as the modern English cathedral music tradition,
and
his research has been supported by grants from the Fulbright
Program, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the A.A. Heckman
Fund
. Also active in performance, he frequently conducts area early
music ensembles and sings professionally at San
Francisco's Grace Cathedral and with the new music
ensemble Volti.
