Clive Chafer is a professional actor, director and producer,
as well as theatre instructor. Originally from England, he trained
in the United States as an actor in the early eighties, and has
been an Equity member for over 20 years. He has performed at most
of the major San Francisco Bay Area theatres, including California
Shakespeare Theater, Berkeley Repertory Theatre, Magic Theater,
Marin Theater Company, and regionally for companies such as Utah
Shakespearean Festival and American Players Theater (Wisconsin). In
1993, he founded TheatreFIRST, Oakland's only
professional, season-producing theatre company for which he has
directed more than 15 productions. He has also directed at several
other theatre companies and educational institutions in the Bay
Area and beyond, including Mills College and Exeter
University.
He gained his Master of Fine Arts in Staging Shakespeare from
Exeter University in 2000. He has been a teacher of both
performance skills (acting, scene study, voice production, text
analysis, dialects) and dramatic literature for over 20 years, in
both conservatory and academic settings. He lives in Oakland, and
works as a freelance director and actor on both sides of the
Atlantic.
