Jay Gonzalez
Associate Professor
Joaquin Jay Gonzalez III has a B.A. in History and Political
Science from De La Salle University (Manila), a Master of Public
Administration from the University of the Philippines, and a Ph.D.
from the University of Utah. He teaches Filipino American and
Philippine studies, Asian studies, as well as international
politics and public policy courses for the Yuchengco Philippine
Studies Program, the Politics Department, the Asian Studies
Program, and the Asian American Studies Program. Prof Gonzalez has
received teaching excellence awards from three universities and
USF's coveted Ignatian Service Award.
A veteran of the Philippine People Power Revolution of 1986, Prof
Gonzalez is a prolific writer and editor on Philippine and Filipino
American migration, political economy, public policy, government
and development. His latest books are: Filipino American Faith in
Action: Immigration, Religion, and Civic Engagement (New York
University Press, 2009) and Religion on the Corner of Bliss and
Nirvana: Politics and Identity in New Migrant Communities (Duke
University Press, 2009). His publications have been translated in
Chinese, Spanish, and Korean. Prof Gonzalez is the co-editor of
Asia Pacific Perspectives and is on the Editorial Board of the Asia
Pacific Social Science Review.
Prof Gonzalez has worked on development and management consulting
projects in Asia, the Middle East, and Africa for international
development agencies and governments. He currently sits on the
board of Street Action UK.
After 9/11, Prof Gonzalez was called to public service and
appointed Commissioner of Immigrant Rights for the city of San
Francisco and Mayor George Christopher Professor of Public
Administration at Golden Gate University. In 2005, Prof Gonzalez
was given the Special Congressional Recognition award for his
exemplary work on immigrant concerns by House Speaker Nancy
Pelosi.
