Family Zosteraceae
(Surf and eel grass)
Phyllospadix scouleri (surf grass)
Phyllospadix scouleri possess relatively
broad leaves (2 to 4 mm in width) that are thinner and flatter than Phyllospadix
torreyi. The blades of this sea grass grow up to 1 meter in length.
Phyllospadix scouleri is found on rocks and ledges and is a useful
indicator of the zero tidal level.
Zostera marina (eel grass)
This species was not found at Pillar Point. However, this
grass of the sea is slightly wider than Phyllospadix
scouleri. It is commonly found in shallow waters of bays, estuaries
and mud flats.
