Biology 345 3 units Offered Every Spring |
| Biology 345 is a detailed introduction to viruses with a focus on the molecular aspects of the infection process. The existence of viruses has shaped the evolution of their plant, bacterial and animal hosts and has played a significant role in our biological and political history. In this course you will find a phenomenal diversity of viruses which, by their nature, exact a range of effects upon their hosts. Understanding the consequences of virus infection requires knowledge of the structure, replication, and molecular biology of viruses, and their relationships with host cells. Thus after an introduction to viruses and virology, we will proceed with a survey of viruses, from the smallest and "simplest" to the largest and most complex, addressing the effects of virus infection upon cells (cytopathic effects), whole organisms (disease) and populations (epidemiology). |
