Molecular Genetics
and Biotechnology
Biology 485-486
4 units
Offered Every Spring

Over the last few years, the traditional separation among biology disciplines (physiology, histology, cytology, developmental biology, genetics, microbiology, virology, immunology and others), has become less defined.  The principal quest in all these fields has been to identify proteins that carry out specific tasks; this has led to the investigation of the genes that encode these proteins.  With advances in recombinant DNA technology, it appears most any biological question can be addressed at the gene level.  Upon completion of Biology 485-486, you will be able to independently carry out techniques in gene (DNA) manipulation, cloning and expression, and will have detailed understanding of the structure, function and biochemistry of DNA.  This lecture - laboratory course is designed for those interested in pursuing an advanced degree in molecular biology or a career in the biotechnology industry.
