Course objectives
Course content
It would be impossible and unproductive to describe management practices in every single country. Instead, my goal is to introduce concepts through which the student can systematically analyze how to go about doing business in and with different countries and communicating with a diverse work force.
Concepts covered by the course include managing in the global environment, the relevance of culture and its relationship to management, the importance of identifying the political, legal, historical, economic and technological environment as well as the institutional environment, social responsibility and ethics, strategic planning, negotiation and decision making, international human resource management, international R&D management, as well as other topics.
Because time is limited, we will cover management practices in only selected parts of the world including Latin America, Eastern Europe, and Asia, with special emphasis on Japanese management practices.
Course format
Students will be expected to think critically about and apply concepts learned from the reading. Students are expected to complete the reading assignments for the day and be prepared to participate in the discussion of the material.
Notations will be made on student participation throughout the course of the term based on frequency and quality of comments. NOTE: Attendance ≠ Participation. As with all business communications, comments and questions should be thoughtful and to the point. This is possible only when the reading has been completed and some critical thinking dedicated to the substance of the reading.
